December 5th is World Soils Day!
As the foundation for everything we grow, healthy soils support food production, water conservation, and greenhouse gas emmission mitigation. Sustainable soil management practices such as recycling organic materials for composting and mulching, support climate-resiliency in our agricultural systems.
Since 2019, 8 Amador County ranchers/farmers have implemented CDFA Healthy Soils Program projects to benefit their agricultural operations by protecting, conserving, and enhancing the soil of their working lands. Their projects included compost application on grazing lands and cropland, range seeding, mulching, cover cropping, and hedgerow planting. Starting fall 2024 a new cohort of 8 farmers, ranchers, and working land landowners have begun implementing similar soil conservation projects on their working lands through the Central Sierra Healthy Soil Program.
The ARCD is proud to support the work of these local farmers and ranchers stewarding healthy soils on their working lands, and applauds the stewardship of Amador County’s farmers, ranchers, and land stewards caring for the county’s landscape.
