CENTRAL SIERRA HEALTHY SOILS PROGRAM

Placer RCD received $4,000,000 in funding from the California Department Food and Agriculture to form the Central Sierra Healthy Soils Program alongside other regional RCDs.
$3.4M was awarded directly to farmers and ranchers operating within Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne, and Alpine counties to implement soil conservation and carbon sequestering projects on agricultural lands. 38 on-farm projects were selected to be implemented over the 4-year lifetime of this grant.
Projects awarded include soil conservation practices such as compost application, rangeland planting, pollinator hedgerow installation, and cover cropping.

Projects on individual farms were awarded based on the following criteria:
- The Program ensured at least one project was awarded in each of the eight counties within the service area
- The Program allocated over 25% of funding to support Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers
- Additional projects were approved on a first-come, first-served basis.
